very time I eat my upper abdomen starts to have a dull ache

I have lost a lot of weight after having my daughter two years ago, and since then when I eat a big meal my stomach aches. However over the past week every time I eat my upper abdomen starts to have a dull ache then I get woken up early hours with an intense crushing pain in the abdomen. Gaviscon and bisodol does not ease the pain and it is very intense. I am 27 and only drink on special occasion.

Hi.

Your main concerns are those of a dull ache in your upper abdomen after eating, an intense crushing pain in the abdomen that wakes you up in the early hours of the morning as well as unexplained weight loss over the last two years since the birth of your daughter.

How old are you? Are you male or female? Are you able to tell us a bit more about the pain - apart from when you eat and at the early hours of the morning, is there any other time the pain comes on? Does it spread to your back? Do you feel sick with the pain? Any vomiting? If yes, what is the color of the vomitus?

What about your stool? is there any change in the colour - is it perhaps darker than usual?

Do you suffer with any medical problems usually? What about medications - are you on any other medications other than the Gaviscon and Bisodol?

While we wait for the answers to those questions to come back, what you have described certainly sound like a condition we call Peptic Ulcer.

Peptic ulcer is an umbrella word used to describe a number of abdominal conditions where there is over production of acid and another enzyme called pepsin.

Gastric (stomach) ulcer and duodenal ulcer are the most common of types of peptic ulcer.

You will need to see your doctor, especially because of your history of weight loss, so that you can be properly examined and perhaps have some form of endoscopy done to exclude more serious conditions. This is even more so if you are 50 years or more old.

Stomach cancer could also cause the above symptoms, but we are NOT suggesting that that is what you have. You will need a proper evaluation.

Your answers to the sets of questions asked above will help shed light on the most likely cause of your upper abdominal ache when you eat and pain waking you up early in the morning.

We would then be able to offer you more specific advice on what to do next.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
